Congratulations to all the couples who got engaged over the holidays! This is SUCH an exciting time in your life - some of you have not shared the news on social media yet and are revelling in just your immediate friends and family knowing, while others have share their joy and are taking in every moment of this beautiful season!
Ladies, I know you probably have dreamt about this day since you were a little girl and most likely already have a binder with a list of things ready to go - nevertheless, here are some of my tips of your as you navigate what you will need for the most important day of your life!
Insure your ring - FIrst things first, nothing can replace the sentimental value of your ring, but if something happens to it, at least you can get your (or his) money back. If you have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, call to add the ring to your policy. You may need an official appraisal before you can officially add the ring, so call the insurance broker to see what paperwork is required. If you don’t already have renter’s insurance, it can be cheaper to buy it (you should have it anyway) and then add the ring. Your broker will be able to help you find the right option.
Set a Date - Even if it's not "The" date, have a tentative month so people have an idea of when they will need to book time off.
Enjoy this season together - Wedding planning can get stressful, make sure to take a moment and enjoy a date night with your fiancé (YES YOU have a fiancé - LET THAT SINK IN!) . Get in some good face time with each other now—and make it a point not to just talk wedding details. Yes, there’s a ton to do, but for now, it’s perfectly OK to hit the town and celebrate—just you and him.
Start a Savings Account - Remember that even a simple, small wedding costs money (and sometimes a lot more money than you would ever imagine). A wedding savings account is an easy way to keep cash accumulating for the big day, so you don’t have to rely on plastic to bear the brunt later on. Open a basic savings account at any bank and set aside an amount every paycheck that’ll go towards wedding-related expenses only.
Discuss the Guestlist with your Parents - Before you start putting a number on how many guests you want, it’s time to ask both your parents about whom they’d most want to invite. Be sure to tell them this is just an initial list and things might change—it’s on paper, not set in stone. After you have their “dream” lists, you can add and edit and trim. Helpful hint: Ask them to help prioritize their wish list by breaking it into tiers—it’ll help you make cuts later on.
Last, but not the least think about hiring a Wedding Planner/Coordinator - I know it seems like a shameless plug in - but it doesn't have to be a professional, it can be a very organized/meticulous friend who will help keep you on track and make sure you everything is handled the day of. Trust me you don't want to be worrying about whether the florist arrived with the right order to the right venue while you're getting hair and make up done the day of your wedding.
